Larger CBB student community since the majority of CBB students are based in Zürich, so more interaction with peers.

D-BSSE lectures only rarely take place in Zürich and are often not broadcast/recorded, limiting direct interaction with CBB professors who are mostly in Basel.

Advanced courses at D-INFK, D-MATH, D-BIOL, and UZH are held in Zurich. Lab rotations or thesis are also possible in any of these departments so many varied opportunities.

Commuting costs to Basel if you do a lab rotation/internship/thesis at a group or company in Basel. (But can be reimbursed by the Department).

Many courses were not recorded at UZH - check beforehand when planning your study plan. So if you would like to take courses from UZH, it might be better to be in Zürich.

Living in Zürich is more expensive than in Basel, particularly with regard to accommodation.

Student life in Zürich is very diverse, with VSETH organising a lot of events.

The department is officially located in Basel, so less interaction with official activities like the after-work pint, seminars and talks.

Prerequisites are held in person in Zürich.

Finding an apartment is usually harder and more expensive.

ASVZ is a very good student sports association, offering loads of courses.


Language courses are significantly cheaper at UZH (80 CHF per semester) than at UniBas (243.00 CHF per semester)


More accessibility to Science in Perspective (SiP) courses, with the whole D-GESS and UZH offer available.


Mountain bike trails close by (e.g. Uetliberg, Züriberg, ...).
